The news coming out of Dallas this afternoon (Thursday, Oct. 10) regarding Errol Spence Jr. is very encouraging. According to a dispatch from Swanson Communications, the PR arm of Premier Boxing Champions, Spence did not sustain any broken bones or fractures when he was ejected from his Ferrari this morning after a rollover. He is conscious and responsive at Methodist Hospital in Dallas where his condition has been upgraded from serious to stable.
Spence, who was alone in his vehicle, was reportedly driving at a high rate of speed when his car crossed the median and rolled over several times. The incident happened around 3:00 am in the Dallas community of North Oak Cliff. Spence, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected. According to Tim Smith, the former New York Times and New York Daily News boxing writer who is the Vice President of Communications for Premier Boxing Champions, Spence’s injuries occurred when he landed rather than from the impact of the crash. Photos of the mangled Ferrari are horrific showing just how fortunate Spence is.
Spence, notes the Swanson Communications dispatch, wants to thank everyone for their prayers and well wishes and is extremely grateful to the Dallas first responders who rushed to the scene to attend to him after the accident and the doctors who are taking care of him at the hospital.
A 2012 U.S. Olympian, Errol Spence Jr (26-0, 21 KOs) was last in action on Sept. 28 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles when he won a hard-fought split decision over Shawn Porter in a unification fight with his IBF world welterweight title and Porter’s WBC belt at stake.
For the past two years, or thereabouts, Spence has been on a collision course with Terence Crawford. Bob Arum, Crawford’s promoter, recently said that he had conversations with Spence’s promoter Al Haymon and was assured that the fight would come off in 2020. However, it was thought that Spence would first defend his titles against Danny Garcia and that he would push a fight with Crawford onto the backburner if Manny Pacquiao became available.
Needless to say, those potential fights may not transpire any time soon.
