Horn asked for a rematch - with the stipulation that it was in Australia. Meaning he really didn't mean it fully aware it would never happen there.... Again, nobody asked to fight Crawford again, who was serious.
Vasyl Lomachenko, who is in the race with Crawford as boxing's top pound for pound fighter, is issued challenges routinely. In fact, Lomachenko has been challenged by fighters he's already defeated in Gary Russell and Jorge Linares.
When is the last time a beaten Crawford opponent has asked for...
GGG threw 6-body punches vs. Canelo....why?
Because getting countered to the head and face bothered him...and he wasn't willing to pay the price. There's no other answer. He was a fierce body puncher in every other fight until he fought Canelo and was spooked from doing it...no coincidence.
"As to whether or not either or both could beat Joshua, there's only one way to find out." stated in the article. I'll take Joshua over Wilder even up.
Wladimir Klitschko at his best would've been a handful for any heavyweight great circa Sullivan through Joshua/Wilder. And he ranks among the greats, the only dispute is where to slot him.
He has nothing in common with Klitschko other than being from Ukraine. Usyk is the first undisputed Cruiserweight champ since Holyfield 30 years ago. And like Holyfield after unifying the Cruiserweight title - he's moving up to heavyweight.
But yes, I see your point - he has more in common with...
I think Wilder's reach and unpredictability would be an issue. I'd have to favor Wilder now but who knows with a few fights under his belt maybe Usyk gets him.
But Holyfield was 25 when he started not 31. And he has huge wins at heavyweight....Beating Joshua would only equate to one of Holyfield's for Usyk. But he made it more interesting!!
Nobody diminished Futch!
One champ before Frazier (and Joe was Durham's fighter)...Don Jordan in 1958. In 1966 capable is what he was....and he wasn't considered HOF worthy until the mid 1980s
Futch's Best Champions:
The March 4, 1991 issue of Sports Illustrated contained Futch's list of the...
Matt, I knew it was never gonna happen this year. There's room for it to become bigger than it is and then it'll happen. Sadly, AJ doesn't need to fight Wilder to make a fortune. However, Wilder needs Joshua to retire wealthy.
I don't believe either side was serious about them fighting this year. But Wilder needs the fight soon because AJ has all the options and doesn't need him.
Got ya Tony! Below is how the IBRO ranks the ATG heavyweights.
Joe Louis
Muhammad Ali
Jack Johnson
Jack Dempsey
Rocky Marciano
Larry Holmes
James J. Jeffries
George Foreman
Sonny Liston
Joe Frazier
Gene Tunney
Lennox Lewis
Mike Tyson
Evander Holyfield
Sam Langford
I've had my fill with GGG/Canelo Deep. But your wish will be granted and they will me in a rematch. After Canelo wins the rematch they'll fight a third time and tie up the division for the next year....No thanks.
Michael Spinks (Holmes) and Roy Jones (Ruiz) fighting an opponent 50 pounds bigger than anyone else they ever fought doesn't get the acclaim it should.
No...Haye was not a fundamentally sound fighter, and he regressed after fighting Klitschko.
When I say Haye looked like Leonard, I mean he looked hollow and empty before ever throwing a punch, that along with no legs and punch resistance.
He is the greatest amateur! And he may have the best footwork I've ever seen. That blows me away but I don't care for his pecking offense. His bouts don't seem like fights...and I get why.
In the Ring vs. Martirosyan, GGG met or exceeded expectations. Wow Bernie, you exposed yourself above! Like GGG or any other star fighter cares about the Undercard????????
You're probably right. But Bellew didn't get under his skin this time, and he sure tried. Haye is a businessman now and needs to win to keep employed, that's his motivation.
I think Moore was a great boxer-puncher, but not as good as Ezzard Charles obviously. Archie is no doubt top 3-4 ATG at 175.
Greb vs. Robinson at 160. My mind can't envision a fighter being greater than Robinson, but Greb beating Tunney showed he could deal with a big strong guy who could move...
Arne, the thing is - if DiBella were managing Golovkin he'd do exactly the same thing! And if I managed Derevyanchenko I'd be doing the same thing in trying to fight GGG on the 5th. Because GGG is due for a letdown with all that's happened regarding May 5th.
Here's another tie-breaker for Greb over Armstrong.
I don't consider Armstrong the GOAT at any weight he won a title.....126, 135 and 147....However, the only middleweight I'd pick to beat Greb is Robinson, and I'd favor Greb with the understanding Robinson could win.
"But why Marciano? Why not Armstrong? Not so sure that's a slam dunk".
Armstrong is in the final three for the final spot....I think Greb had the better career. Armstrong wasn't great for nearly as long.
Storm....it's out right wrong having Marciano over Greb....to do it you have to be from Boston, Italian and/or don't know boxing or its history....just because there are supposed boxing guys in Ted's survey, doesn't mean they know what they're talking about....and probably 50% of them don't. But...
Ted.....Greb was more like 2-2-1 or at worst 2-3 vs Tunney, who was also great and a good deal bigger thanGreb!
Greb has the most impressive resume of any fighter ever!
You gotta reserach him. He has the best resume of any boxer who has yet lived...beat more HOFers and champions and in most cases they were bigger than him.....he gave Gene Tunney his only defeat even tho he spotted him a lot of weight....and Dempsey wanted no part of Greb, and Harry was a...
It will be one big party over there and Whyte and Fury are gonna make the most of it. Chisora and Bellew might show up and make a scene.
Wilder dropped the ball
COULDN'T AGREE MORE!!
On paper Ted it should be no contest, but we know they don't fight on paper. I see your point about Parker and Ruiz but I thought Joe clearly handled him from a boxing/fighting perspective. How Joshua shows in this fight will go a long way in how much demand there will be for him to fight...
I'm tired of hearing AJ & Deontay going back and forth -- if AJ beats Parker, they need to make the fight and deliver the fight most fans want to see instead of going the Bowe-Lewis route.
The contaminated meat story is starting to look a little skittish and clumsy......if they fight GGG better stop him because he won't get a decision over Canelo.
Thanks, Ted.
No way Garcia slaughters Prograis. Out box him, probably. But Mikey has never been in with a guy as confident, powerful and strong as Regis. And I believe 140 is the ceiling for Mikey to be effective...even at that he never had Broner in trouble and after dropping Lipinets, he was...
And Ali gave everybody a shot. And if there was a new badass on the block - Ali sought a fight with him when he had nothing to gain. IMO Ali is the gutsiest and bravest fighter I know of. He feared nothing and had total belief that if he was in shape he couldn't be defeated.
Very true....but had he beat Frazier the first time the win wouldn't be as big as it is now.....losing to Frazier the first time was a blessing for his legacy.
The debate you mention is over and has been addressed....total non issue but some like to read their own words & thoughts!
As for Garcia-Chavez, never thought about it but that's a good one. I think Prograis is a beast with the ultimate belief in his toughness and power. He could be a handful...
By fundamentally, I mean he covers the basics better than anyone else. If you were to introduce someone who doesn't know much about boxing....you'd use Garcia as the one to show....this is what it looks like without injecting athleticism and flash into it. Terence Crawford is the best fighter in...
Mikey Garcia is the the most fundamentally sound fighter in boxing right now, not the most athletic or physically gifted but he does it the way it is supposed to be done...everything he does has a purpose and to set up the next move. No wasted movement or punches - and none of his opponents...
That's it Storm...I'm stumped!
Beterbiev and Garcia aren't similar nor do they go about getting it done the same way....but you're entitled to your opinion, and if you dispute mine I'll live with that too.
OMG....Mikey is three times the technician and fighter Beterbiev is. I won't bother to go into because we're too far out on this one. That's boxing and countless other things that people see differently.
I'm not sure who I like between Garcia-Lomachenko........but love your confidence dwindling in Wilder and you need a back up. But I know our bet is good for Joshua-Wilder and you'll lose and yes Loma beats the aging Linares.
Thanks, Storm.
Yes, Mikey is the best technician in boxing. Not the flashiest, prettiest or most athletic. Unless you have a special prospect or talent, Mikey is the one you'd have him emulate....as the same applies to Joe Louis.
Mikey is the most fundamentally stout fighter in the game....how anyone could rate Golovkin or Lomachenko over him.
Golovkin lacks the stylistic diversity and Lomachenko doesn't have nearly the body of work, but I'd love to see them fight.
LOL...I'm certain Joshua dumps Wilder....never said that about Garcia beating Lomachenko....but I may see it that way when they fight but now I'm on the fence...
No Ted, our bet is Joshua-Wilder. But you're getting rubber legged and wanna back it up with Loma....because you know you're gonna...
No! It means I'm objective and just because I don't think Loma walks on water - I acknowledge that he's capable of beating Mikey, just not sure he will. Then again Mikey has to knock him out because Loma is the new chosen one, so Garcia couldn't get a decision short of beating him to death.
Okay, Ted. I'm not gonna jump on Loma...but stop with the excuses...they can come back to bite ya. I just hope they fight. Garcia has much more than the others to trouble and beat him at 135...I just hope we find out about his chin - something that is unknown.
Ya mean the 10 win once beaten Loma, right?
We'll see...not sure who I like in that one but Garcia has as good a chance as Loma. He should wear a Salido mask in the ring.....wait...lemme step back so I can shield off the excuses for losing to a 13-loss fighter!
I've been on the Judges...Wilder didn't win a round until the 5th....as far as the A side...Not a chance...AJ will have three belts and nobody knows who Wilder is outside Alabama and DiBella's household.......that said Wilder gained my respect, he's no fraud.
He was fortunate....and all three judges having him up? He won three rounds at the most!
However, like Joshua did against Klitschko, Wilder showed he has a massive heart and his right hand is a fight altering punch. I still say Joshua gets him within five but Wilder's showing versus Ortiz makes...
Look at the buzz Wilder has created.... Joshua vs. Wilder will be even bigger than Lewis-Tyson because Mike was only a big name and personality in 2002. AJ & Deonaty are both in their prime.
I thought there was a reason Matthysse mentioned Pacquiao's name out of the blue
http://www.thesweetscience.com/feature-articles/47787-matthysse-pac-man-tkoing-kiram
True......I just wish I could get on board with those who think he's a monster. I see nothing but a big right hand and awkwardness which I know is a weapon.
I think he is capable of beating Ortiz.....Ortiz hasn't looked good for two years. But yes, if he wins and it's on the up and up he should get credit. I've gone more email than I have recently from this article with guys split...saying it's a bag job or Wilder hits harder than I give him credit for.
Maybe even bigger than Frazier fighting Foreman for 850k instead of re-matching Ali and splitting six million. At least Frazier could fight and before the fact justify beating the inexperienced green Foreman at the time.
Ted, I have a hard time taking this fight seriously, regarding there can be a winner aside from Wilder. If Ortiz won it would we the biggest colossal management miscalculation ever!!
If I had a say, Ambrose or whatever his name is would never write about boxing again for my entity. That's the problem, everybody with a PC or Laptop can write for a site. Giving Estrada one round is shameless and shows that many really don't know exactly what they're watching or the fan in them...
I have no idea, Jeff.
Giving him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he has a bias towards aggressive fighters and got a little carried away? And if he admitted that instead of trying to justify 9-rounds for Rungviasi, it would bother me but it would be a little easier to accept opposed to him...
Morrow screwed it big time!!!......115-113, 115-114 Rungviasi or 114-114. But Rungviasi won no more than 7-rounds. Nobody that knows what they're watching can see 9 rounds for Rungvisai...it is Impossible unless you're inept or have an agenda....or a bias towards aggressive fighters as I stated.
Ridiculous.....judges are paid to get it right....117-111 Rungviasi is way outta whack. No....two got it right.
What about when two get it wrong. It only takes one to ruin it.
I go by his work not his words...if he saw Rungviasi winning nine rounds he's inept if he's not crooked! Everybody usually comes off great when Interviewed which is why I never do them.
Stop, Ted! Nobody who wasn't rooting for Ortiz thought he won! Even Rafael had it 118-110 same as bad left hook. I trust my eyes over anybody and there's no case for even a draw. Great...reward Ortiz because he didn't quit like most thought he would. All the work Alexander and others who get...
The Puerto Rican and Hispanic fans back their fighters. I was pulling for Alexander due to all that he's been through - but I can be objective. Devon won but the only I guess is hurt is his record because he'll move on with another TV fight most likely but neither are a title threat.o
OMG Ted....Alexander ran away with that fight and Virgil was giving Ortiz too much credit for not quitting. Regardless Alexander won at least eight rounds...Ortiz was second during every exchange or damn near every one.
I think Crawford-Spence is the fight I most wanna see. I used to favor Crawford but I'm a lot shakier on that pick than I was before I saw Spence dominate Lamont Peterson who was completely out-gunned.
I agree Crawford is not as good defensively as Ward, Mayweather or Lomachenko - but that's like saying Sugar Ray Leonard wasn't either. Crawford takes more chance looking to put hurt on his opponents more than they did. I believe you've boxed some so you know when you fight like that you're more...
Ted...I know but I was only comparing at 175....as for Brady....It's impossible to say anyone was better.....but I think others have played QB as good but they lack his playoff success and that's the tiebreaker with me.
Foster's power wasn't overrated...one of the best at 175. IMO he could never beat Ruiz because he's not nearly strong enough and doesn't have the legs or feet to beat him boxing or fighting off his back foot....But he'd match up great with Jones at 175.
Good point...I agree fighters need to be colorful. I also think he was tweaking Tyson because Mike said AJ is the future of the division. That's said Wilder's resume is very thin. Not totally his fault, I get that.
I could see him beating those guys with the exception of Joshua and could see him losing to most of them too.....but saying he'd kick the hell outta Tyson doesn't fly.
Yeah....AJ sees the almost certain win and a ton of money....not saying Wilder is a bum but compared to a great like Tyson, well, that's not a substantive debate.
I think he sounds foolish because he has the worst resume of any title holder ten years in fighting as a pro. And he's been bailed out by lottery shots a few times. I like his confidence but Tyson 18-months into his career was fighting a better grade of fighter consistently more so than Wilder...
As I said....nothing amazes me more than how two informed people can look at the exact same thing and be on opposites ends of the Universe.....makes the World go round, I guess. I've stated my case and I still think it's borderline laughable to say Floyd was a greater fighter or more skilled...
Sort of like beating a flyweight who was KO'd two years earlier. Jeff, sometimes you expose yourself without intending to. I know you're a huge fan of Bernard Fernandez. Ask him if he values my insight...because I swoon regarding Jones dominating Ruiz.
Foster lost to every heavyweight he fought.....and Moore never fought a 221 pound heavyweight on Ruiz's level. But I'll cede Moore....so I think the Jones win over Ruiz isn't overrated. Calling him heavyweight champ...that's another issue because Lewis was the best at that time....and Roy...
Great post Storm....thanks for your praise and glad we part on this one as friends....look forward to engaging on other topics. PS: I read most of your post and I value your boxing insight. Nothing amazes me more in how 2 informed people, not just you and me....can look at the same thing and see...
Storm...your post are too long for me to get through and repeated dribble IMO. The facts of why Roy was better didn't change in three years....but Roy highlighted for once that he was the greater fighter. What should I do...invent reasons why Roy was greater? No, they didn't change and neither...
Really....try and name another light heavyweight who would've beat Ruiz other than Michael Spinks? Ruiz only lost to Holyfield and fought Tua way before he matured and filled out. Instead of jumping on Ruiz which is easy to do before thinking about all he accomplished, ask some of his opponents...
Storm....you can post all the grocery list you want......Jones was superior to Mayweather in every category except as a manager....and I highlighted that Roy said it for once. Wondered why it took him so long. Mayweather has hoodwinked an entire generation of boxing fans....no need to reply to...
Amazing how Mayweather has hoodwinked a generation of fans. And not just casual fans either. Weak opposition? Where are the greats on Floyd's record? Mosley, 8- years after Forrest did it twice? Cotto, three years after Pacquiao did it to a better version more impressively. Canelo before he...
Brownsugar....you made some good points. However, I disagree with you regarding Hopkins & Toney. Roy lapped them and those fights weren't thrilling it was because Roy was so spectacular. I don't think from a skill vantage point I don't think Floyd was in the class of Ray or Roy....not that many...
Bernie, apparently there's a few points you don't get and dimensions of boxing you don't grasp. Its much more than throwing punches and to make money fighters need fans to care not just the hardcore ones. Spence & Crawford need more than their skills to sell the fight for it to become a...
BTW Bernie, you're correct about Spence as an amateur but he's improved, like Thomas Hearns did, since turning pro. His style isn't suited for three round fights when body punching is non existent.
Conviction is backed up by Money....anybody who thinks Thurman beats Spence, email me and set up our bet....if you really believe. I've run into a bunch of guys who like to drift from the crowd to be different than vanish when it comes time to betting....and backing up their hollow words!
no excuses for Joshua and Wilder not to get on with their much anticipated showdown with all the meaningful hardware on the line before the end of 2018.”
