Anthony Joshua Injured in Fatal Car Crash in Nigeria

LAGOS, Nigeria — December 29, 2025

British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua, the former unified world heavyweight champion, was involved in a serious car accident in Nigeria on Monday, authorities and news agencies report. Two people died in the collision, and Joshua sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

According to statements from the Ogun State Police Command and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the crash occurred around 11 a.m. local time on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Makun, a busy highway in southwestern Nigeria. The Lexus SUV in which Joshua was riding lost control and collided with a stationary truck parked on the roadside.

Preliminary investigations by the FRSC suggest the vehicle was traveling above the speed limit and attempting an overtaking maneuver when it lost control, leading to the fatal crash. Two of the occupants in the SUV died at the scene, and their bodies were taken to a morgue in Sagamu.

Eyewitnesses and social-media footage from the scene reportedly show Joshua being helped from the wrecked vehicle while visibly shaken and wincing in pain, though conscious.

Police confirmed that Joshua, 36, was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. As of the latest reports, his exact medical condition has not been publicly disclosed. Local officials have extended condolences to the families of those who died and said a thorough investigation of the accident is ongoing.

Joshua, born and raised in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents and having spent part of his youth in Nigeria, was in the country following his recent boxing activity. On December 19, 2025, he scored a sixth-round knockout victory over YouTube-turned-boxer Jake Paul in a high-profile bout in Miami, which many saw as a step toward a potential return to world title contention.

The crash comes as Joshua was reportedly in talks for a potential 2026 fight with fellow British heavyweight Tyson Fury, though no official fight date has been set.

Further updates are expected as police and road safety officials continue their investigation and as more information becomes available about Joshua’s condition

I’ve seen the raw video of the crash site. First picture the dystopian wasteland that is Nigeria. Add two dead mangled bodies strewn on the road after being ejected from the vehicle and add a gaggle of locals buzzing around on scooters taking pictures and videos. The vehicle itself comes into the frame; it’s a large black SUV and the front end is crushed in. Sitting in the backseat, seemingly unharmed, is Anthony Joshua. He’s later seen emerging from the wreckage like a bear emerging from hibernation. Like a big yawn 🥱!! It could be said that Jake Paul was more injured by a single hard punch from Joshua than Joshua was from the impact of a multi-fatality car wreck. AJ is very lucky to be alive and this is plainly the most interesting thing to have happened to him in years and the kind of before/after event that changes men’s lives. Will it do that for Joshua??
