Las Vegas, NV -- The late New York sportswriter Dick Young once wrote that there is no greater drama than in the moments preceding the opening bell of a world heavyweight title fight. In Young’s day, there weren’t four world sanctioning bodies, let alone three, and a world heavyweight title fight was front page news in all the tabloids.

Tonight, there was only one title belt at stake (okay, two if one counts the lineal diadem), but the tension was thick inside the MGM Grand Garden arena as Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury, recognized in many quarters as the two best heavyweights in the world, made their ring entrances.

Fury entered the ring on a throne to the tune of Patsy Cline’s “Crazy,” an odd choice but somehow appropriate. It was an entrance that set a new bar for flamboyance. He looked supremely confident and with his namesake “Iron” Mike Tyson looking on, he delivered the goods with a smashing performance that ended at the 1:37 mark of round seven when the white towel of surrender was thrown in from Wilder’s corner.

At the opening bell, Fury came out of his corner with a rush and had Wilder fighting off his back foot. In round three, the Gypsy King decked Wilder with a punch that seemed to land behind his ear and may have resulted in Wilder suffering a busted eardrum.

Fury scored another knockdown in round five with a left to the body. Later in the round, referee Kenny Bayless docked Fury a point for what was apparently hitting on the break.

Fury dominated the sixth and it was more of the same in the seventh until Wilder’s corner saved him from suffering more punishment. Fury improved to 30-0-1 with his 21[SUP]st[/SUP] knockout. Wilder suffered his first defeat in 44 pro starts.

The crowd was pro-Fury and typical of any boxing crowd with a large body of Brits, very boisterous. At the conclusion, many sang along as the Gypsy King serenaded the crowd with a version of Don McLean’s “American Pie.” It was an event that will linger long in memory.

I was not impressed with Wilder or his friend Kenny Bayless.

Seems the American referee was ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIED at the beating Deontay Wilder was getting from Fury and after doing his level best to help him out during black history month, he decided to do his job and stop the fight?!? Congrats to Tyson Fury for overcoming Wilder and the ridonkulous hype train that was selling him hard as the power punching GOAT.

KO - did you think the ref and ringside doctor in Fury's last fight bent the rules for Tyson by allowing the fight to continue despite the HUGE cut from a punch? Whatever - great, great performance by Fury, carried the extra weight without any difficulty and put it to good use - an exciting, but rather one-sided fight. The big punchers aren't so big when they're forced to walk backwards. (Also props to Wilder, no quit in him.)

A few years ago during the 2016 election I had Wilder on a media teleconference with a Russian opponent he was supposed to fight in Russia. The fight (against Povetkin) never happened. The Russian was being asked about the pressure of fighting in front of President Putin. He replied, whatever it was he said. I’d be honored or whatever. So I asked Wilder, along those same lines. Which future American President would you like to someday perform in front of, President Clinton, Trump or Sanders? I was really asking him to predict the election and show his loyalties. He laughed, ducked the Q straight away and told me I was real sneaky. Obviously President Trump was smart not to get behind, show up for, tweet about, or promote Wilder in any way while he was in Las Vegas campaigning. Wilder is of questionable character and skill. He staged a fake fight in PR vs. Scott. When Trump had him at the White House for the pardon of Jack Johnson that would have been a good time to wise up and get this boxing loving POTUS behind him but we all know he did the exact opposite. And Trump boosted the UFC and Dana White.

This fight was almost an exact mirror image of Fury's fight against Steve Cunningham seven years ago. Well minus Fury getting knocked down of course. I think Fury went back to the drawing board after the first fight with Wilder and re-examined how he was so effective against a smaller Cunningham. And Fury thought if he could break Cunningham down thru mauling, leaning on, etc then the same thing could be done to Wilder. And of course Fury needed to mix in sharp hard counters which he did including making a point to work Wilder's body (much more so than the first fight). Smart game plan and it worked to perfection. Wilder, on the other hand, made no adjustments.

Exactly!!

That Fury was/is a heavy load, a massive handful for anyone.

I never forget that performance. Felt bad for USS Steve.

Wondered when we’d see that TYSON again.

The king has returned!
great job from start to finish by Tyson Fury
I got 10-1 on Fury by KO/TKO

D3 . . . .

You must be so elated after all these years.

Fury is (finally) the heavyweight division and he’s just destroyed Wilder and sent him back the lick his wounds.

I was only thinking to myself - again - the other day . . . .

I can’t believe I’m singing the praises of the Gypsy King.

Particularly, after all the respectful disagreement we had about his potential years ago.

And, my how you have grown.

You're actually now a “D3”; not - as per my earlier post (below linked) - a D2.

Cheers,

Storm.

Hey D3,

I like the fight.

Canelo (Tough/skilled Mexican) V Saunders (Hard Nosed Gypsy Traveler/Boxer) should be an entertaining match-up.

Saunders has both, been waiting for the fight for ages and been given long enough to properly prepare for it as well.

I'm not sure about Saunders beating Canelo though.

Particularly in Vegas.

Hope all is well with you.

Cheers,

Storm.
