Topps Boxing Cards

I was kind of excited for today as Topps was launching a new Boxing card product. According to the press release I saw this is the first time the card manufacturer was releasing a specific product for boxing since 1951. It was slated to go on sale this morning on their website and I wanted to pick up a box or two or three to bring back some old memories of ripping cards.

To my disappointment at the announced time of launch no product was available. According to some much more versed in the industry than myself "bots" jumped in to immediately purchase all or nearly all the product made avaiable by Topps. What this apparently means is those sophisticated in the industry were able to secure basically all the boxes/cases made avaiable by Topps and subsequently re-list on secondary markets such as Ebay for three to four times the original cost.

Of course this is what they are asking now. We will see if the parties involved are able to move the product at the costs they are currently asking or have to drop the price in the coming days/months.

I will personally not be hitting the secondary markets right now to buy these cards. Maybe later if the prices fall may dab into a little. Or if I find the right card I want may just purchase individually instead of buying a box/case.. And that seems to be the sentiment of fans similar to me who were hoping to purchase direct from Topps today.

But that said really in hindsight should not be so surprised by this from Topps. In one of their promos they featured a card of Floyd Mayweather Jr. where he was listed as a "Featherweight." I could be wrong but don't recall Mayweather fighting as a pro at featherweight...

With sports cards it’s usually smart to wait out the high demand and high prices of that early release period. Modern cards have become very complicated and redundantly layered. This Topps product, albeit in a niche sport stuck in a downturn, looks no different. I’m interested but not in buying boxes or opening packs but maybe in sniping singles depending on what’s available on EBay etc.

Yeah I was going to get a box but when I got shut out at open changed my mind. Even if I could get one now at original cost after thought much prefer to wait it out and just look for singles on Ebay. It will probably save me quite a few bucks in the long run b/c the odds of getting a "hit" really are not that good from what I understand.

Plus we have boxing autographs already from our years involved in the sport. I literally have Hagler and Hearns boxing cards signed by both guys in person. Topps can’t touch that or the memories we have.
