Wrapping It Up

Great friend and fellow-writer Paul Magno adds: "Man...We'll be losing one of the VERY few good ones...but you have to do what you feel is best for you...To be honest, I've been mulling over writing about something else and leaving boxing behind as well...But I intend on going away with a bang, not simply fading away...haha...You better stay in touch, though...""

Peter Silkov of the "Boxing Glove" says, "Hello Ted, sorry to hear that you've decided to hang em up, you are one of the few boxing writers that I still read! maybe write another book? that would be interesting to see and is something I am working on finally putting together. I don't think AJ wants any part of Joyce, not many do actually. I think he is a future world champion if he gets a shot and probably the most dangerous fighter out there at the moment for Tyson Fury. I agree with the diva stuff, it just makes me switch off these days, do your fighting in the ring or just shut up is my feeling.

All the best!"

My friend for many years, Jim Lampley, sent me this email: "I saw it, Ted. I will miss your intelligent writing, but I am thrilled that you will slow down a bit and bask in all the meaningful things you have accomplished. You are a family man with family priorities and that increases in significance as the days go by." Man is as humble and accessible as anyone I have ever met in the Boxing world.

Great friend for 40 years, Gary Boyd, from Kissimmee, Florida, just called me to say some nice things. We saw the Holmes -Cooney fight together and lost a bundle. Also-Tyson-Spinks. Geez- All this stuff is making me blush.

John DiSanto, the keeper of Philly Boxing history, emails: "Ted, best of luck to you. It’s been a real pleasure reading your stories. I’ll miss them - and you.

John"

Ted,

You are a genuine boxing man through and through and your wonderful writing always resonates your ability to see to the heart of any subject.
It is my honor and pleasure to have contributed a boxing story to your wonderful book "Reelin In the Years, Boxing and More." Your journalistic career and power lifting journey are nothing short of amazing. It is my distinct pleasure to know you and I have always enjoyed your boxing articles and stories. Please stay safe and well. Blessings, Ron Lipton.

Ron, the feelings are mutual. You have been a great and loyal friend for these many years. Thank you, buddy.

"The end of an era, Ted. You were a link to the Golden Age of Boxing. But I know how you feel. I think you picked the right time.
Now just sit back and enjoy!" Michael Silver, Author and historian.

Another 40+ year friend, "Barry Burns, Ted Over so many years I have really enjoyed your stories bringing so much to real life now.

"Thanks Ted, a Job well done!" " Guy Casle, former heavyweight contender and subject of a compelling video soon to be released.

"Ted,

I enjoyed reading your column. You were smart, insightful and it’s clear that you understand the game. A lot of that is in short supply today!

You also said some nice things about me I’m on the way and when you’re a judge you don’t hear that too often. It was very much appreciated!

God bless and Godspeed,

Tom Schreck"

I'll need to think on this one a bit, Jill, but suffice to say, there were no negative factors involved. I'll email you.

"Ah, wow! I'll miss reading your articles, Ted. You have a great boxing writing career you can be proud of. Congratulations on retiring on your terms :)

Thanks,
Caryn Tate" Boxing writer

From best friend, former fighter, referee, and judge Bob Benoit (37-8): "Well Ted, you have had a great career and have chosen not to hang around but to leave the Sweet Science on your own terms. Your decision is tempered by observing, for many years, those who have hung around too long and become easy prey to others. We all know who they are or were. They were fighting in the 11[SUP]th[/SUP] round of a 10-round bout, and everyone had gone home. Will miss ‘your stuff’. Always in your corner. Bob B."

"Thanks for all the incredibly great reads and insights of the sweet science over the years Toro! Gonna miss it big time. Peace…Pete (The Sneak) Rivera." Brooklyn

I probably should have mentioned as a PostScript that, after a great run, I have also retired from powerlifting. This tumble l in Boston last year sealed the deal. Picked up the bar too quickly and torpedoed backward. Not a rarity but it was the first (and last) time that it has happened to me, very scary but I was not injured. Again, going out on my own terms.
