We were do for a run of good luck. Those of you old enough to remember Lenny and Reggie will recall the heartbreak of losing those young men to tragedy. Go Boston! Eight wins away from the next banner.
Okay, so the season didn't end quite as well as I hoped. So you look for consolation.
This is about the best I can do:
Golden State and Cleveland have a combined record of 24-1 going into the finals. The one setback? Delivered by Boston.
Future once again looks bright.
Thank You Isaiah and Co. for the huge effort.
I think the Cavs would make a deal with anyone, Heat and Celtics included, if an offer blew them away.
As for the Heat, they just don't have the package. Dragic is 31 and Winslow is good but had a bad year. And the Heat can't deal any first round picks until 2023. They would have to find a third team to make any sort of package work. But third teams in NBA teams are generally salary dumps. So though I think the Cavs would do business with Riley if it were right, it just doesn't fit.
The reason Boston might work is they have the assets. I think any Kyrie deal for the Cavs will involve draft picks and win now players. The Celtics have that. The Cavs might see it as a package that still keeps them on top this year and protects them in case the unthinkable happens again. The Celtics have been hoarding assets waiting for a young star. Thomas is a free agent in line for a big pay day that Boston may not want to do. Kyrie replaces him and is under a reasonable contract. It really could happen if Boston would be finally willing to part with the assets.
I think they did away with the rule preventing teams from trading 1st rd picks on back to back years or am I off on that?
Dino, Cavs will almost certainly trade Irving at this point and Ainge has reportedly asked them to keep him in the loop. The Cavs will no doubt get some big offers (much bigger packages than say Cousins, George or Butler commanded recently) for a star point guard under control for the next two years at a modest contract compared to what others are making who has probably not reached his full potential.
If Boston comes up with a package around Thomas, Crowder, Brooklyn's pick next year and the Memphis pick later on that may be enough to entice the Cavs to pull the trigger even with an Eastern Conference rival. Do you think Ainge would consider such a package?
