Today Governor Greg Abbott of Texas announced issued a revised order that stated that not only could professional sports leagues restart in June but outdoor stadiums would be allowed to host fans at up to 25% capacity.
This announcement could be huge for boxing. The reason many experts expected big fights to be on hold for the time being was that those fights needed revenue from ticket sales in order to meet the purse demands of the fighters. And up until this announcement from Governor Abbott any return of any sporting event was going to be done for the foreseeable future without fans.
So what could this mean for boxing? Well there is a very large stadium in Texas, AT&T Stadium, that can holds about 100,000 fans (give or take a few thousand) for an event. And the person affiliated with that stadium, Jerry Jones, has hosted boxing events in the past. As a matter of fact Canelo Alvarez fought there in September of 2016 when he knocked out Liam Smith in the ninth round.
Jones has also flirted with idea of hosting a Canelo-Golovkin fight at AT&T Stadium. Vegas was always believed to be the clear front runner for both Canelo-Golovkin fights and of course T-Mobile Arena did host both events but Jones did at least "talk" about hosting those fights at AT&T Stadium.
Well now Jones can do more than just talk. At 25% capacity that would put a potential paid audience of around 25,000 people. It could be more than enough to gets talks going. And who knows maybe that capacity gets upped a bit as the summer progresses.
DAZN, who has contracts with both Alvarez and Golovkin, badly needs a big event sooner rather than later. They are hemorrhaging subscribers with no live boxing at the moment and a third Canelo-Golovkin fight in the summer would certainly bring back those who cut their subscription (and potential many new additions as well).
Canelo has recently warned to a third encounter with Golovkin. Golovkin, for his part, has always wanted a trilogy with Canelo. However a small road block maybe Golovkin's desire to go forward with his bout against Kamil Szeremeta. Golovkin has stated on a few occasions he wants to honor that fight before proceeding toward a trilogy with Canelo. But I sense that Golovkin's stance could be persuaded to change on that matter...
Canelo-Golovkin III is now very realistic for the summer given this announcement for Governor Abbott today. Also with this announcement I could see other states soon do something similar. For example Florida would also seem like a realistic possibility to soon approve fans at events and as such be in play to also host bigger fights (Lopez-Lomachenko??) down the road.
