Boxing Is Back

Soon the Nevada State Athletic commission will be meeting and will presumably move forward with a pair of Top Rank for early June.. These events will feature no fans in attendance and will be broadcast on an ESPN platform.

Bob Arum of Top Rank has also been quoted by numerous publications in recent days stating his intent to put on multiple cards a week beginning in June.

And reportedly an agreement is being negotiated for the much anticipated Teofimo Lopez-Vasyl Lomachenko lightweight unification title fight to take place in September fans or no fans. Apparently both sides badly want the match with no tune up fights.

The sport is about to come roaring back. I for one expected a wave of events but not the bigger fights like Lopez-Lomachenko. But it appears could be getting both. The sport is not dead as some indicated could happen. Instead we are about to see quite a "V" shaped recovery.

Don't count your chickens before they are hatched. An uptick in the virus could end that possibility faster than you can say "Yikes."

It has gotten to be like a TV muder/mystery. Keep people guessing, keep people thinking they got in figured out then bam bam bam. Everything changes. But got to keep people interested no matter what. It is not just boxing every sport is doing it. At this time people will fall away from the sport they love. After a while it does fade. For me anyhow. If it comes back what will it be? I hope everyone keeps it safe. They the ones in control could turn this thing around into something they really feel is a great step for boxing. I dont know. I am still just sitting back and watching the thing play out at this point. I am still concerned about workers rights during all this. But that is not a boxing topic, unless we are talking contracts of fighters then sure we can kick that around the block.
Stay safe keep your eye on the PRIZE..........

One fight reportedly in the works for the end of June on an ESPN platform is a 140 pound clash (catchweight maybe?) between Alex Saucedo and Sonny Fredrickson. I am absolutely stoked about this fight. Saucedo is an all-action brawler who just can't be in a bad fight (remember his classic against Lenny Z a few years ago). Fredrickson is a very skilled athletic boxer puncher who has quick hands and is a very precise combination puncher. He was once a highly touted prospect but a couple losses have set his career back a bit. This is an excellent evenly matched fight on paper and should be highly competitive in the ring. Not to mention their styles will make for an action packed fight. These are the type of fights I expect we see a lot of until we get to the point, and we will, when fans are back in the arena. I am excited to see the sport coming back and particularly can't wait for Saucedo-Fredrickson toward the end of June.

So one guy lost to Hooker the other guy lost to ??? Ergashev? And these are all fights that have been signed and ESPN is showing as broadcasting but without fans? I know about the talk going around about boxing coming back but I did not know that ESPN has put out a schedule of fights already. Good for them if they did.

Yes they both have losses. But Hooker is one of the top 140 pounders out there and Ergashev in my opinion is one of the best up and coming fighters in the sport. Saucedo needs to learn defense. Fredrickson has areas he can improve (and has already shown significant signs since that Ergashev loss). This is a well matched crossroads fight. These are the type of fights the sport needs more of. I absolutely love the matchmaking here and can't wait to see it play out in the ring in a few weeks.

Did you listen to the past podcast with Roberto Diaz the matchmaker? I have heard him interviewed several times. Has a good story about his inroads to boxing matchmaking. If you did not hear it it MIGHT interest you. I have heard him talk a few times He is a good embassabor for boxing. Some guys are garbage but so far he talks match up really good. I would like to read more about the bussiness of match making somebody decent had to have done a book or a documetary on the bussiness of match making. I know nothing about when boxing will start again I do not beleive what the promoters are saying. Just me. Until it is a signed contract and they are in the ring and the bell rings it is not real. I enjoy fighters that loose once in while means they are taking chances having an O dont impress me especially if that is what drives a fighter to fight. I also like to see two well schoooled fighters and not so well trained that they still make mistakes and it is up to the other guy to cap on them. But some people like a perfect record. It has happened but a real undefeated fighter is rare.

I have not listened to the podcast from with Diaz. But I have covered fights where Diaz was present and have had the opportunity to talk with him on a few occasions. He is very passionate about the sport and takes a lot of pride in his work. He also cares very deeply for the fighters (and not just the ones his company promotes). I have learned a lot from him in those conversations about the art of matchmaking. One of the many good people in this sport. If I get a chance this weekend I will make sure to check out the podcast.

Next time you talk to him tell him what I said.
He is a good embassador for boxing. Those guys are hard to find. That type of work has got to be for those that really love the fight game or it shows up real fast. people can die if they do not die they never get past what it takes to move up. I have heard stories that were not nice about what people did to make a fight and ruin a guy for life. it is not just bussiness it is personal. He is with Golden Box if I remember.
